Running

A thirty-six-year-old man had a passion for running and was hampered by tight hamstrings. He explained that he had to do repetitive toe-touching every morning to try to stretch his short hamstrings. He found it hard to believe when we explained that this repeated exercise was stressing the lower back, and therby causing irritation to the nerves from the lumbar spine which supply the hamstrings, keeping them constantly tense. Eventually he was persuaded to give up the toe-touching to allow his lower-back stress to be released, and normal communication restored to his leg muscles. He was amazed to find his hamstrings were no longer ‘short’.
